The Simple Routine Every Founder Should Have

The scariest part wasn’t losing the clients. It was realizing I had no real system for getting the next ones. Luckily I found this simple routine that saved my company.

Back in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy wiped out all my clients for months and I meant I had no revenue coming in, I was forced to adjust how I was getting clients.

I couldn’t rely just on meeting random people locally at networking breakfasts, and waiting on referrals from a friend of a friend.

It was time to get proactive and create a systematic way to get myself known, trusted, and hired.

Doing it manually is impossible (as I’m sure you can relate?). There isn’t enough time or energy in a day for a Founder to do all of that themselves.

So I adopted a new routine:

A routine that seems overly simple to the newcomer. Too easy almost (this is called Sophistication Bias btw).

And if you haven’t experienced it yet, then like anything new you’ll have skepticism.

But when I started doing this, something magical happened.

Instead of chasing after “potential opportunities,” waiting around for those referrals, wasting time on good conversations that turned into nothing, and hoping an old “maybe” would come back and say they needed something.

I started getting inbound requests for my services from all over the country.

Not just people from my area who heard of me through the grapevine (which honestly is more hope than strategy)

It was ‘strangers’ from San Diego, Utah, Massachusetts, Florida…that already knew me, liked me, and trusted me before we ever spoke in person and they wanted to hire my company.

If you’ve ever seen the stat that most people spend 70% of their time researching on their own before they reach out to hire someone, this was what I figured out how to tap into.

This is where I was able to show up and build a relationship with people who need what I have to offer without having to find and chase them myself. So I didn’t have to waste time on things that would go nowhere and I didn’t know it yet.

Instead, what I did was simple:

I stopped letting my best answers live only inside private conversations.

Here’s what you can steal to start doing the same thing:
I spent some time looking at all of the questions and conversations that my potential clients were asking me either directly or posting online somewhere (right in my inbox or on my calendar and meeting notes), and then I started sharing my advice online to help them.

People who were looking up those things online would find my content speaking to them, and they would reach out to hire me.

They’d be scrolling through social media and see my posts speaking directly to their situation and they would connect, keep seeing my content, and then reach out to hire me.

I’m not saying it’s easy, but it is simple. And it does create far more leverage = less time and effort but more impact.

Most importantly, in your saved time on all that chasing and hoping for clients, you can focus where your time is best used and needed.

Here’s the shift you need to make for this to work:

Stop thinking that getting clients means personally finding more people to talk to and burning your calendar to the ground.

The move here with more impact is making sure the people already looking for help can find and trust you before they ever find your calendar.

One path keeps you chasing, but the other builds trust in places your time can’t physically go.

Here’s how to unlock all the hard work you’re already doing and turn it into more clients:

your most useful thinking is trapped in one-off calls, DMs, emails, and conversations only one person ever hears.

When those insights you are sharing privately become visible, your expertise starts doing work without needing you to personally have every single conversation to meet and nurture new prospects.
